La Pintoresca Branch Library will host a specialized online workshop Friday, June 13 designed to help community members understand how immigration affects mental health and identify strategies to support immigrant families during cultural adaptation.

The “Skills for Adaptation and Resilience for Immigrants and their Families” presented by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, aims to normalize the migration experience while providing practical tools for supporting newcomers through the acculturation process.

“We’ll learn about the impact of immigration on mental health, identify stressors, and discuss actions we can take to help immigrants during the acculturation process,” according to the event description.

The workshop will be offered in two sessions to accommodate different language preferences. The English-language session runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon, followed by a Spanish-language presentation from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Zoom.com.

Participants must sign up in advance to receive the Zoom link for the virtual event. The workshop targets Adults, Adults 50+, and Emerging Adults (18-24), reflecting the library’s commitment to serving diverse age groups within the immigrant community.

La Pintoresca Branch Library has established itself as a cornerstone for immigrant support services in northwest Pasadena. The facility serves both as a library and community center, providing residents with a welcoming meeting place and extensive Spanish-language collections totaling approximately 33,600 volumes.

The library’s existing programming includes “Leeme un cuento: Spanish-Language Story Time” every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., featuring quality Spanish-language picture books read by native speakers. Additionally, the branch partners with Pasadena City College to offer a Basic English Conversation class every Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Friday’s mental health workshop represents an expansion of the library’s role in addressing the comprehensive needs of immigrant families beyond traditional literacy and language services. The event falls under the library’s Community & Civic Affairs and Health & Wellness programming categories.

For accessibility information and requests, participants should contact the library site hosting the program. Providing at least 72 hours advance notice will help ensure availability. The Spanish accessibility notice states: “Para obtener información y solicitudes de accesibilidad, comuníquese con la biblioteca que ofrece el programa. Proporcionar al menos 72 horas de anticipación ayudará a garantizar la disponibilidad”.

The workshop builds on similar programming offered throughout Los Angeles County library systems, where mental health professionals have previously addressed topics including migration normalization and immigrant stressor identification.

Registration for the free workshop remains available, with separate sign-ups required for each language session to receive the Zoom link.
