Los Angeles County officials are set to hold a crucial public hearing on a sweeping plan that could reshape development in parts of the West San Gabriel Valley for years to come.
Pasadena residents may take particular interest, as the changes could impact development patterns in neighboring unincorporated areas. The plan covers communities that border parts of the city.
The Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to consider adopting the West San Gabriel Valley Area Plan and its accompanying environmental report.
The plan would guide growth in unincorporated communities near Pasadena, including Altadena, the East Pasadena-East San Gabriel area, and Kinneloa Mesa, County planning documents show.
Officials say the plan aims to foster “harmonious and coordinated growth balanced with natural resource conservation” in an area facing development pressures.
The plan would update zoning and land use policies to align with current needs and projections, according to County planners. It also aims to accommodate growth near major transit stops and implement the Housing Element Rezoning Program.
The September hearing will take place at 9 a.m. at the Hall of Records at 320 W. Temple Street, Room 150 in downtown Los Angeles. Officials say virtual attendance options will also be available.
County documents indicate the plan would emphasize principles like walkability and community vibrancy. It seeks to enhance public spaces and pedestrian infrastructure in the affected areas.
The plan addresses specific aspects such as economic development, conservation and open space, mobility, public services and facilities, and historic preservation. It also aims to conserve natural resources and limit development in hazard areas.
The plan is part of a broader County initiative to guide development in unincorporated communities. Similar plans are being developed for other regions of Los Angeles County.
Those unable to attend the September hearing can submit written comments to County planners. The draft plan and related documents are available on the County’s planning website.
