Authorities have identified a Los Angeles man who was killed in a fiery rollover crash on the 134 Freeway in Pasadena on Sunday that also left four others, including two children, severely injured, officials said.
Andranik Grigoryan, 46, died in the violent solo-vehicle crash, which took place about 2:10 p.m. on the westbound 134 Freeway between Linda Vista Avenue and San Rafael Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol and Pasadena Fire Department officials.
Four passengers in the 2020 Mercedes-Benz SUV all suffered major injuries, Sgt. T. Pourroy of the CHP’s Altadena-area office said in a written statement.
The survivors were described as a 3-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl, a 20-year-old woman, and a 39-year-old woman, according to the CHP. Fire officials had initially described the surviving victims as one woman and three children.
All five victims shared the same last name, however, their specific relationships were not clear.
The SUV was traveling at an undetermined speed when the driver lost control, Pourroy said.
“For unknown reasons, the driver of the Mercedes turned the vehicle to the right in an unsafe manner which caused the Mercedes to run off the roadway,” he said.
The SUV struck a concrete wall and continued traveling west until it struck a eucalyptus tree along the right shoulder head-on, according to the sergeant. It ended up overturned in the right-hand lane of the freeway.
“Emergency personnel arrived on scene and the Mercedes was partially engulfed in flames,” Pourroy said.
The four passengers had managed to get out of the SUV, but the driver remained inside the burning vehicle.
After extinguishing the flames, paramedics found Andranik Grigoryan inside and ultimately pronounced him dead.
“This traffic collision is still under investigation and alcohol/drugs are not suspected,” Pourroy said.
The three right-hand lanes of the 134 Freeway were shut down for more than three hours as officials investigated the scene.
