A mental competency hearing for Guarry Lonnie Shuford III, the Los Angeles man charged with murder in the 2023 fatal shooting of his girlfriend outside a Pasadena apartment complex, is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in Department 103 of the Hollywood Courthouse, according to a court hearing notice.

Shuford, 33, barricaded himself inside the victim’s apartment, leading to an hours-long SWAT standoff in August 2023. He has been in custody since his arrest after that incident concluded. He faces one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in the death of Jamila Elysse Moss, 34, of Pasadena, who was found fatally shot in the 200 block of South Raymond Avenue.

Pasadena police have said the shooting appeared related to domestic violence between Moss and Shuford, who were in a relationship at the time.

Shuford was on parole for a 2010 robbery conviction when the shooting occurred, and had been charged separately with firearm possession less than a month earlier while free on bail. He is being held on $3.075 million bail.

The case has been heard at Pasadena Courthouse since Shuford’s 2023 arraignment, including a preliminary hearing in March 2025 and a pretrial hearing this past December.
