Michigan State University fan “Johnny Spirit” was arrested following a win by the Spartans after allegedly staying on the Rose Bowl field without a pass on Wednesday, January 1.
Spirit, whose real name was John Sheldon, was approached by three law enforcement officers after the game in which Michigan State defeated Stanford; 24-20, WLNS-TV reported.
Spirit said he had a pass, but it was taken by an usher. He was then held into custody for about 30 minutes before his pass was given back, he told WLNS-TV.
The Michigan fan, who is often seen roaming around the campus on bike while wearing green body paint and stripe green and white shorts with an “S” marked on his chest, has been known as an unofficial mascot of Michigan since 1993.
He is also often seen wearing an oversize inflatable football helmet.
