The January Eaton Fire didn’t just burn structures—it exposed how catastrophically unprepared locate communities were for natural climate disasters, with widespread underinsurance a ticking time bomb that has devastated many families.
Now the NAACP Pasadena Good Trouble Alliance is zeroing in on preventing the event from destroying more lives.
“We are all one climate change event away from disaster,” organizers wrote in announcing their September 17 virtual workshop, “Climate Change is Real — Are You Prepared for the Next Time?”
The 90-minute evening session (7:00-8:30 p.m.) confronts uncomfortable realities: Do you know what documents are critical? Where they’re located? Have you reviewed your insurance policy? Is your financial house in order with appropriate estate planning? The workshop’s tagline—”Get Your House in Order”—carries new urgency after January’s devastation.
United Policyholders, estate planning attorney Portia Wood of Wood Legal Group LLC, and representatives from the National Organization of Minority Architects will guide participants through insurance literacy, document storage, home hardening strategies, and developing rapid evacuation plans.
“Too many members of our community are facing and dealing with these issues,” the event announcement states, acknowledging the crisis already unfolding. “Climate change is real. It’s time to get prepared.”
The workshop specifically targets disaster readiness gaps in vulnerable communities, aligning with NAACP Pasadena’s broader mission to foster resilience and equity amid environmental challenges. Organizers promise practical tools for understanding insurance coverage, securing critical documents, completing estate planning, and creating “go” plans for evacuation.
The public workshop welcomes all residents via Zoom.
Participants receive access details two days before the event, with four email reminders scheduled. “Please check your email,” organizers advise. Registration through Eventbrite remains open. Attendees should bring family, friends, and questions.
