Parsons hosted an “Evening of Engineering” at its Pasadena corporate headquarters on May 1, 2014. The event was aimed at junior and senior girls from local high schools—Arcadia High School, Blair High School, Flintridge Preparatory School, Franklin High School, John Muir High School, Maranatha High School, Mayfield Senior School, and Polytechnic School—who have a strong interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The 2-hour event included a series of workshops and discussions that provided 30 participants with insights into choosing, studying, and working in various STEM-related disciplines. The workshops and discussions ranged from such topics as drainage/water quality and roads and highways to personal empowerment and ways engineers contribute to delivering a better world.

“We were so excited to host an ‘Evening of Engineering’ and to get young women interested in science and technology,” said Metta Dollar, Parsons Talent Management Director and Pasadena Educational Foundation Board Member. “Who knows which of these students might work at Parsons someday.”

“Special thanks to all of the Parsons employees who contributed to making this event a success as well as to the Pasadena Unified School District for its participation,” added Dollar. “We look forward to spearheading other local STEM-related initiatives in the near future.”

As a global engineering, construction, technical, and management services firm with nearly 15,000 employees worldwide, Parsons understands the importance of introducing students to STEM and has spearheaded and/or supported STEM internship programming and in-school programming in the communities where our employees live and work. Previously called the Future Scientists and Engineers of America, Parsons has led its ParSTEM Pasadena Chapter for the past 17 years in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). Parsons employees enjoy volunteering to work with PUSD students to perform real engineering and science. Parsons staff engage students in hands-on projects that range from building a robot to constructing a basic bridge. In addition, Parsons employees participate in other activities such as mock interviews and resume workshops.
