Six new speed feedback signs are now flashing at drivers on four of the city’s arterial streets, part of a five-year program that has deployed 68 such signs citywide.

The City of Pasadena installed the signs on El Molino Avenue, Los Robles Avenue, Del Mar Boulevard, and Green Street, the Department of Public Works announced this week. The locations were selected based on observed speeding trends and reports from residents, according to the city.

Two signs now face northbound and southbound traffic on El Molino Avenue between Del Mar Boulevard and California Boulevard. A single sign monitors northbound traffic on Los Robles Avenue between California Boulevard and Fillmore Street. Two more signs track eastbound and westbound traffic on Del Mar Boulevard between Berkeley Avenue and Grand Oaks Avenue. And one sign faces eastbound drivers on Green Street between Orange Grove Boulevard and Grace Terrace.

The signs display a vehicle’s speed in real time—a measure the city describes as a proven method to encourage safer driving. The installations are part of the Arterials Speed Management Program, which began in fiscal year 2021 and is scheduled to run through 2025.

Director of Public Works Greg de Vinck announced the completion of the installations. The department says it will continue adding signs as part of its long-term approach to managing vehicle speeds on key corridors throughout Pasadena.

The program supports the city’s broader goals of improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, according to the announcement.

The 68 signs now in place represent years of incremental work on streets where traffic data and neighborhood concerns pointed to speeding problems.
