A resident of a unit in Pasadena apartment building is in serious condition at a local hospital this morning after inhaling heavy smoke during a Thursday night fire.

The 11:30 p.m. blaze in the 200 block of South Madison Avenue left the entire four-story center hallway apartment building uninhabitable, officials said, because of the damage and their inability to secure gas and water to just one unit.
The blaze erupted in a third story unit and firefighters were able to contain flames to that single apartment, officials said.
There was heavy smoke and water damage to the unit involved and several units below.
The fire was knocked down in about 36 minutes, an official said.
“All occupants as of right now have a place to go” said Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian.
There were no firefighter injuries.
Pasadena firefighters were backed up by mutual aid assistance during the incident by units from the San Marino, South Pasadena, and Alhambra Fire Departments.
Derderian said investigators are on scene and the cause is unknown at this time.
