The Pasadena & Foothill Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIAPF) is marking its 75th anniversary with unprecedented growth and strategic initiatives focused on equity and education.
Part of the national American Institute of Architects organization that has represented American architects since 1857, the local chapter achieved record membership numbers in 2024.
“We have seen our highest level of membership this year, in our 75-year history, with 451 members in March,” said Andrea Cabalo, President of AIAPF.
The growth comes as the chapter implements its 2024-2027 Strategic Plan aimed at broadening access to architectural education and professional development across its service region.
A key component of the chapter’s expansion is its new student membership category.
“This year we also introduced a student membership category and currently have 15 students,” Cabalo noted, highlighting the organization’s commitment to nurturing future talent in the field that now serves over 400 members in the Foothill region.
The chapter intends for its programs reach all members effectively.
“Where do they live and work and how can we align programs to geographically support our serve region equally,” said Cabalo.
This strategic approach has led to expanded educational initiatives at Cal Poly Pomona and Harvey Mudd, particularly serving members in the eastern edge of their service area.
AIAPF’s community engagement initiatives have included architectural tour series, a Birdhouse competition, and Summer Social events. The chapter has also fostered intergenerational knowledge sharing.
“This year we hosted a Happy Hour with the Fellows where our ‘seasoned’ practitioners shared their rich experiences with our emerging professionals,” Cabalo explained.
AIAPF will showcase its achievements at its Holiday Mixer and Annual Business Meeting on December 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at PCL Construction, 655 No. Central Avenue #1600, in Glendale. The event will feature food, drinks, games, and a comprehensive Year in Review presentation highlighting metrics, financials, membership counts, and continuing education programs.
Recent accomplishments include an American Institute of Architects California Chapter Award and support for a member’s Young Architects Award from National American Institute of Architects.
The organization, which receives support from various sponsors and allied members in the architectural community, will determine its 2025 initiatives at its January Board retreat.
