The Flintridge Center, a Pasadena nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth, was recognized as Nonprofit of the Year in Congresswoman Judy Chu’s Congressional Leadership Awards.
The award ceremony, held this weekend, recognized outstanding leaders and organizations in California’s 28th Congressional District. Representatives from the Flintridge Center team and Board of Directors attended the event.
Flintridge Center was among nine honorees selected from nominations submitted by members of their community. The awards aim to recognize exceptional individuals and organizations contributing to the San Gabriel Valley community.
“Flintridge Center has dedicated itself to effectively helping those that are many times forgotten by the rest of society,” Congresswoman Chu said during the awards ceremony.
Chu also highlighted Flintridge’s evolution into a “powerhouse of community support,” noting its provision of trauma-informed care to formerly incarcerated individuals in a welcoming environment. She also mentioned the effectiveness of Flintridge’s services for youth, families, and adults coming home from incarceration, and commended the center’s innovation and responsiveness to community needs.
Josh McCurry, Flintridge Center’s Executive Director, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. He shared stories of individuals who have benefited from their services.
McCurry spoke of a Youth of Promise participant who, after his father’s incarceration, now attends Pasadena City College’s program for system-impacted students. He also mentioned an adult constituent who, previously unhoused and facing re-incarceration, now lives independently in Pasadena with dismissed criminal charges.
Flintridge Center’s approach stems from its nearly 40-year legacy of deep commitment to aiding those impacted by the criminal justice system.
“We are committed to creating a community for young people to thrive and reach their highest potential,” McCurry said.
The organization expressed eagerness to continue working steadfastly with the community, partner organizations, and leaders for the people of the 28th Congressional District.
Other awardees included Brandon Tsay for Courageous Service, Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley as co-recipient of Nonprofit of the Year, and Ed Donnelly as Volunteer of the Year.
