Pasadena congressional representative Judy Chu will lead San Gabriel Valley seniors Monday in protesting what she calls dangerous cuts to Social Security, as the federal program marks 90 years of uninterrupted payments to American retirees.
The 10 a.m. rally at Alhambra’s Joslyn Senior Center puts Chu at the forefront of a nationwide Democratic effort to spotlight Social Security Administration layoffs that advocates claim are creating service delays for local beneficiaries.
“The Trump administration and House Republicans are cutting Social Security, laying off customer service workers, and making it nearly impossible for seniors to receive the benefits that they have earned,” according to Chu’s office, which organized the event as House Democrats “fight back to stop these cuts.”
The timing is symbolic: Social Security turns 90 on Monday, having “never missed a payment” since 1935, organizers noted.
Chu, who represents Pasadena and surrounding communities in Congress, will be joined by Chris Otero, an Alhambra-area Social Security recipient and member of the California Alliance for Retired Americans; Terry Turrentine from the union representing SSA workers; and Jonathan Weedman of Via Care.
The “Day of Action” reflects growing tensions over the Social Security Administration’s capacity to serve the thousands of San Gabriel Valley residents who depend on the program for retirement income, disability benefits, and survivor benefits.
Pasadena-area residents interested in attending can RSVP to Chu’s office through Claire Berry at claire.berry@mail.house.gov or (202) 597-2923. The Joslyn Senior Center is at 210 N. Chapel Ave. in Alhambra, and the event runs from 10 to 11 a.m.
