Pasadena Counts Down to Tuesday’s Elections

Published on Saturday, March 2, 2024 | 6:15 am

With a flurry of last-minute mailers and waves of door-knocking, local candidates are heading to the final weekend of campaigning before Tuesday’s Primary Election.

The City of Pasadena’s Primary Municipal Election will be held on March 5 for the Office of the Mayor (citywide election), City Council Districts 1, 2, 4, and 6 (by-district elections), City Council District 3 to fill the remaining two years on an unexpired term (by-district election), and City Charter Amendment Measures R, S, and T (citywide elections).

On Friday Pasadena City Clerk Mark Jomsky recapped for Pasadena voters their three options to vote for these important City races and issues:

  1. By mail, completing the Vote by Mail ballot sent to each registered voter, and returned to the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters with a postmark on or before March 5, 2024 (return postage is paid, no stamp needed);
  2. By depositing a voted ballot contained in the Vote by Mail envelope at any of the eight ballot drop-box locations located in the City of Pasadena on or before March 5, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.; or
  3. By voting in person at a vote center location in Pasadena, or any vote center location in Los Angeles County, on or before March 5, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.

Following the close of polls on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters will begin tabulating election results. Live results will be posted on the County’s election webpage: www.lavote.gov

With over 5.5 million registered voters in the County of Los Angeles and voted ballots often exceeding 2 million submitted for counting, the County will need several weeks to tabulate all votes cast in order to certify final election results. Each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, the County will update the tally of the ballots processed and counted to that point.

The County is anticipated to complete its ballot tabulations at the end of March/beginning of April with final certified results.

The Pasadena City Council will then be presented certified election results for their official acceptance on Monday, April 8, 2024.

Pursuant to City Charter Sections 401 and 404, the start of terms for the successfully elected candidates on the March 5, 2024 Primary Municipal Ballot, in the races noted above, will begin on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the City Council’s Organizational meeting.

In accordance with City Charter Section 1204, if no candidate in a race in the Primary Municipal Election receives more than 50% of the votes cast for that race, then the two candidates with the most number of votes received will continue to a run-off election as part of the November 5, 2024, General Municipal Election ballot.
