Lead and cadmium are toxic metals commonly found in the environment. While low-level exposure is typical, significant or prolonged exposure can cause serious health issues. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s public announcement, these substances “can affect nearly every bodily system,” with symptoms ranging from abdominal pain and vomiting to seizures, behavioral changes, and developmental delays. Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. The agency also cautions that “a child with heavy metal poisoning may not look or act sick,” despite facing long-term risks such as learning disabilities or reduced IQ.
As of July 22, no illnesses were reported.
Consumers who purchased the recalled product are advised not to consume it. They may discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The product was distributed through Grocery Outlet stores in California, including in Pasadena, and other locations across the U.S.
