Pasadena Heritage will be presenting the 27th Annual Craftsman Weekend on Friday through Sunday, November 9 to 11, with several offerings that highlight the Asian influence on Craftsman architecture.
A tribute to Pasadena’s unique contributions to the American Arts and Crafts Movement, Craftsman Weekend is the largest most comprehensive celebration of the Craftsman Movement in the Western United States.
Pasadena is home to some of the most notable examples of the Craftsman Movement on the West Coast. Also known as the American Arts and Crafts Movement, the architectural style emerged in the early 1900s and is noted for its emphasis of ceramics, art, and other features developed by skilled craftsmen.
Tracing its roots to England, Craftsmen design has nevertheless developed a unique and internationally lauded aesthetic in Pasadena, with the work of architects Charles and Henry Greene, tile maker Ernest Batchelder, and writer/photographer Helen Lukens Gaut, among others.
A Pasadena Heritage announcement said this year’s Craftsman Weekend will include a lecture and tour at the Gamble House, a bus tour, and a Saturday night reception at the Storrier Sterns Japanese Garden.
The event will also feature house tours of notable Craftsman properties, including two Greene and Greene commissions, along with bus and walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods. Other events include a Show and Sale with exhibitors of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative arts, a silent auction, workshops and presentations.
The Antiques and Contemporary Furnishings and Decorative Arts Sale, which is free admission, will showcase more than 40 exhibitors from across the U.S. and their broad spectrum of Craftsman-era and period-inspired works.
In addition, Pasadena Heritage will be offering exclusive receptions at historic locations throughout the weekend. A notable feature in this year’s program is five bus tours, more than the organization has ever offered before.
A 2018 Craftsman Weekend Brochure, downloadable from the Pasadena Heritage website, www.pasadenaheritage.org, includes a complete schedule of the lectures, workshops and demonstrations; walking tours and bus and drive-yourself tours; and receptions and special events. Ticket prices for each event are also included in the brochure.
Be sure to visit the Pasadena Heritage Membership and Merchandise booth for Craftsman Weekend Souvenirs, and the popular Silent Auction, at the Pasadena Convention Center at 300 E. Green Street, which will close at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are not required for events at the Convention Center.
