The City of Pasadena held its annual Police and Fire Memorial yesterday morning to honor first responders who died in the line of duty, an event that carried added significance this year following January’s destructive Los Angeles fires.
The ceremony took place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Pasadena City Hall, where city officials, emergency personnel and community members gathered to recognize the sacrifice of local heroes.
“Pasadena’s Police and Fire Memorial was an opportunity for city officials, police and fire personnel, and community members to honor Pasadena’s first responders who died in the line of duty serving the people that live, work, and visit in Pasadena,” a city statement said.
During the solemn ceremony, family members of the fallen were honored with a public reading of their loved one’s name and the year of their passing. To date, seven Pasadena police officers and 10 firefighters have lost their lives while serving the community.
The memorial coincided with National Police Week, which recognizes sacrifices made by police officers nationwide. This year’s ceremony took on additional meaning as the region continues to recover from January’s devastating wildfires that swept through parts of Los Angeles County.
“These brave families are an extension of the Pasadena police and fire community and show up year after year to be a part of the ceremony that honors the lives of their loved ones,” the city’s statement said.
City residents were encouraged to attend the event to support emergency responders who put their lives on the line every day “to serve the residents, visitors, and businesses of our great city.”
