Local residents will have an opportunity to meet directly with housing counselors and representatives from several local organizations during a free housing resources event Aug. 28 at the Jackie Robinson Community Center.
The city’s Rent Stabilization Department will host its next “Chats & Snacks with a Housing Counselor” event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center, 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
The event will include representatives from the Rent Stabilization Department, Pasadena Department of Housing, Housing Rights Center and Friends In Deed, bringing several housing-related services together at one location.
Representatives will give brief presentations at the beginning of the event before meeting individually with residents to answer questions and provide guidance.
“We’re very happy to see how Chats & Snacks has continued to grow with each event,” Rent Stabilization Department Director Helen Morales said. “What started as a way to bring Housing Counselors directly into the community is evolving into an opportunity to connect residents with an even broader range of housing resources.”
Rent Stabilization Department counselors will provide information on Pasadena’s rent stabilization laws, including tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities, rent increases, petitions, rental registration and other rental housing issues.
The Department of Housing will provide information on affordable housing, rental assistance, Housing Choice Voucher, or Section 8, services and other city programs intended to help residents obtain and maintain stable housing.
The Housing Rights Center will offer free landlord-tenant and fair housing counseling, including assistance involving housing discrimination and disability-related reasonable accommodations and modifications.
Friends In Deed will provide information on services for individuals and families facing financial hardship, housing instability or homelessness, including food assistance and other support programs.
“By bringing these organizations together, we’re able to offer residents a more complete picture of the support available to them, whether they’re facing housing instability, have questions about their housing rights, or want to learn about rental assistance and affordable housing opportunities,” Morales said.
The event is free and open to the public. No registration or appointment is required, and residents may drop in at any time. Those who want to hear the introductory presentations are encouraged to arrive at 11 a.m.
Coffee and snacks will be provided. Rent Stabilization Department housing counselors will be available to assist residents in English and Spanish.
