The Pasadena Unified School District is introducing restorative practices and mediation into the curriculum for TK-12 students.
The project, in collaboration with Pasadena-based Western Justice Center (WJC), intends to provide students in grades TK through 12 with essential tools to manage conflicts, cultivate relationships, cope with stress, and foster a sense of community.
“Our partnership with the Western Justice Center brings restorative practices to PUSD schools to strengthen positive relationships so that students feel safe, cared for, and connected,” Dr. Elizabeth Blanco, PUSD Interim Superintendent, said. “It is part of PUSD’s holistic approach to preparing students in quality learning environments that support and promote their ability to thrive.”
As part of the program, student leaders will receive training in restorative practices, including youth-led peer mediation and community-building circles. The training covers a broad range of skills, from emotional self-awareness and self-management to de-escalation techniques, empathetic listening, collaborative problem-solving, community-circle facilitation, and nonviolent communication.
“It’s a great opportunity to empower students to use their voices in a positive way, especially when they’re in conflict,” said Stephanie Fonseca, Assistant Principal at Blair Middle and High School.
The program also offers parallel training for educators, administrators, and other PUSD staff. PUSD said plans are also underway to extend similar offerings to parents.
“As we continue to grapple with the impact the pandemic has had on our schools, students, and educators need additional support,” Elissa Barrett, WJC Executive Director, said. “WJC is proud to play its part in supporting the PUSD community.”
WJC, also based in Pasadena, is renowned for providing conflict resolution training. Over the past two years, the organization has trained and mobilized more than 2,000 students, educators, and volunteers across LA County.
WJC operates an online curriculum portal, called School Tools, that reaches more than 45,000 educators across 150 countries worldwide.
