This Friday, Pasadena’s Villa Parke will burst into a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and flavors as the city celebrates Fiestas Patrias, honoring the independence of 18 Latin American countries with an evening of music, dance, and cultural pride.
The family-friendly event, scheduled for Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Villa Parke Multi-Purpose Field, is part of Pasadena’s Latino Heritage Month celebrations, running from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
“Fiestas Patrias is the celebration of the independence of 18 Latin American countries,” said Jennifer Colby, Public Information Coordinator for the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. “This family-friendly event highlights Latin America culture’s colors, richness and warmth.”
The celebration will feature a parade of nations, live performances, and children’s activities, showcasing the diverse Latino community in Pasadena and providing an opportunity for cultural exchange and community bonding.
Attendees can enjoy live music by Nueva Dimension Norteña, ballet folklórico performances by groups Mexica and Nahuatzen, and Aztec dancing by Yankuititl, all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
For families with young children, the event will offer bounce jumpers, ensuring entertainment for attendees of all ages. Food options will be available from Sophia’s Tacos, selling tacos, burritos, and quesadillas.
A highlight of the evening will be “El Grito” at 6:45 p.m., a reenactment of the historic call for Mexican independence.
“[‘El Grito’] is a reenactment of the historic battle cry that marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence,” Colby explained.
The timing of Fiestas Patrias coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries, particularly Sept. 15, which marks the Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Latino Heritage Month in Pasadena fosters greater understanding and appreciation of Latin American cultures across the United States. The month honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Fiestas Patrias reflects Pasadena’s commitment to honoring the cultural heritage and contributions of Americans with Latin American ancestry, providing a platform for intergenerational sharing of traditions and community engagement.
The celebration is hosted by the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services department, with Marco Bermudez serving as the event’s MC.
Pasadena’s Fiestas Patrias event offers residents a unique opportunity to experience the rich traditions of 18 nations through music, dance, and community engagement, highlighting the city’s diverse cultural landscape.
