NASA collected a total of 12 recognitions at the 29th Annual Webby Awards on Tuesday — including scoring ‘honors’ for a groundbreaking deep space video transmission managed by Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The space agency received six Webby Awards and six Webby People’s Voice Awards, which are determined by public voting. Among the honored projects was the first video streamed from deep space by the Deep Space Optical Communications Experiment, a technological demonstration managed by JPL.
The Webby Awards recognize excellence across eight major media categories: websites and mobile sites; video and film; advertising, media, and public relations; apps and software; social; podcasts; artificial intelligence, immersive and games; and creators.
NASA’s digital presence has been consistently recognized by the Webby Awards since 1998, with the agency receiving more than 100 nominations and winning 49 Webby Awards and 67 People’s Voice Awards over that period.

The Webby Awards, established in 1996 during the web’s infancy, are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), a judging body comprised of over 3,000 experts. The Academy consists of Executive Members — leading internet experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries, and creative celebrities — and associate members who are former Webby winners, nominees, and other internet professionals.
Each category presents two honors: the Webby Award, selected by IADAS members, and the Webby People’s Voice Award. In the spirit of the open web, the Webby People’s Voice is chosen by the voting public and garners millions of votes from all over the world.
