Golf balls rained down upon the green at Brookside Golf Course Friday as the Pasadena Police Athletic League (PAL) held its annual fundraiser at the historic course nestled alongside the Rose Bowl Stadium in the Arroyo Seco.
After the tournament itself concluded and golfers were making their way off the greens, a helicopter flew overhead and eventually settled down onto the course, where event officials were ready to load a large bin full of numbered golf balls aboard the copter.
Then, rising into the cloudy sky, the helicopter circled once and returned to hover about 100 feet above the greens as the crew poured the balls down onto the course.
According to PAL Event Coordinator Jill Hawkins, the balls had been sold to members and supporters over the previous few months in anticipation of the drop, which raised approximately $4,000. The ball closest to the pin earned a cash prize, while the ball furthest away earned its owner a new TV.
The fundraising event allows the league to provide a wide range of after-school activities at programming for its youth participants, most of whom are low-income residents, according to PAL Program Director Pasadena Police Corporal Christian Allen.
