A free community event built around a youth flag football clinic, backed by the Los Angeles Rams, the Los Angeles Chargers and the NFL’s youth flag program, runs from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 23, at Pasadena City College’s Robinson Stadium, opening the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles’ NFL FLAG season.

The event is free and open to YMCA members and nonmembers alike, and about 700 children had registered as of Aug. 6, with registration continuing to a cap of 800, Pasadena Weekly reported.

The kickoff is a collaboration of the YMCA, NFL FLAG, the Chargers, the Rams, Toyota and RCX Sports. Organizers have planned interactive games, giveaways, food and family activities, along with refreshments, inflatable games and mascot appearances. Stacy Lewis, the YMCA’s executive director of youth sports, said representatives of both NFL teams are expected, with player visits dependent on training camp availability.

Attendees can enter a raffle for one of 250 pairs of tickets to the Chargers-Rams preseason game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

The clinic opens a season that will be free for YMCA members because of sponsorship from the Chargers, Rams, Toyota and RCX Sports, Pasadena Weekly reported. The arrangement is “Hugely important because it eliminates the barrier to entry,” Lewis told the paper. The college added women’s flag football as an emerging sport in May.
