Registration for the popular Pasadena Senior Games opens Monday, March 24, offering adults aged 50 to 100 the opportunity to participate in Olympics-style athletic competitions. The games, scheduled from May 17 to June 29 at various Southern California venues, will feature 18 different athletic events designed to promote healthy lifestyles among older adults.
“Every year the Pasadena Senior Games promotes healthy lifestyles for older adults through education, fitness and the spirited competition of sports,” said Akila Gibbs, Executive Director of the Pasadena Senior Center. “These remarkable athletes are shining examples of the benefits of an active lifestyle that embraces health and vitality.”
Last year’s games attracted 1,100 participants across a 50-year age span.
The competition welcomes athletes of all skill levels, with no previous experience required. Registration is fee-based and can be completed by visiting www.
Research from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Research Center indicates that older adults who engage in physical activity experience improved physical, emotional, and social health outcomes. These benefits include a decreased risk of hospitalization.
The games also offer volunteer opportunities for people of all ages. Volunteers can assist with various tasks including registering athletes, timing, scoring, and manning water stations. Those interested in volunteering should call (626) 685-6755 or email sports@pasadenaseniorcenter.
For 65 years, the Pasadena Senior Center’s mission has been to improve the lives of older adults through caring service with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism. As a donor-supported nonprofit, the center operates without any local, state, or federal funding while providing more services to older adults in the San Gabriel Valley than any other organization. With 10,000 Americans per day becoming older adults, the center is a leader in addressing the issues of aging.
Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
