The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department has completed a thorough sanitization process and safety surfacing replacement at local parks, playgrounds, and recreational fields in response to the Eaton Fire.
The department’s efforts were aimed at minimizing potential exposure to wildfire contaminants, despite no specific hazards being identified.
City staff undertook several steps to ensure the safety of public spaces.
All park benches, tables, playground equipment, and poured-in-place rubber playground surfaces (completed in February) were sanitized.
The City also rinsed natural turf fields through irrigation and rain in February.
Sanitizing of synthetic turf fields was completed in early March.
The City replaced the top three inches of sand and engineered wood fiber at all play areas with new materials, completed by late March.
Additionally, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services staff took further measures following the fire in January. The Honorable John J. Kennedy Pool underwent water clarity restoration, with thorough cleaning of the pool’s sides and bottom, vacuuming of the pool water, filter backwashing, and adjustments to chlorine and pH levels. The pool reopened on January 18.
Community and recreation centers were cleared, air quality was tested and monitored, and the centers reopened on January 14.
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services is encouraging residents to follow public health guidelines and take necessary precautions when engaging in outdoor activities. Air quality information is available on the South Coast Air Quality Management District website.
