Altadena area residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronic items at a free drive-thru collection event on Saturday, Oct. 5. The event, part of the “Too Toxic to Trash” campaign, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fleet Maintenance Yard.
Located at 252 West Mountain View Street in Altadena, the collection site will accept a wide range of toxic materials that are unsuitable for regular trash disposal. Residents can bring paints, solvents, and other chemicals, which should be securely packed in their vehicle’s trunk or pickup bed.
Organizers emphasize that hazardous waste must be isolated from other items to ensure safe handling. They advise participants to transport waste in sturdy boxes, preferably in original containers, as these will need to be left at the site.
The event will also provide a designated area for the disposal of sharp objects, such as needles and lancets. Residents will be required to exit their vehicles to deposit these items in a specialized bin. Exiting vehicles may be necessary for other types of waste as well.
Electronic waste (E-waste) will also be accepted at the event, offering a comprehensive recycling opportunity for residents. While the service is extensive, certain items are prohibited. Explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, controlled substances, trash, tires, and large appliances like refrigerators will not be accepted.
To maintain efficiency and fairness, organizers have set a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.
The collection is exclusively for Los Angeles County residents, and business waste will not be accepted.
In light of ongoing health concerns, officials request that individuals experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, under quarantine orders, or awaiting test results refrain from attending.
The event is sponsored by Los Angeles County and presented by Los Angeles County Public Works and Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, in cooperation with the unincorporated Altadena community. It offers a convenient solution for residents to dispose of potentially harmful materials that might otherwise pose environmental or health risks.
