Sheri Bonner, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley (PPPSGV), is celebrating 20 years at the helm of an organization that has seen major expansion under her leadership. Since taking the role in 2004, Bonner has overseen PPPSGV’s growth from a single health center to a network of five, now serving 55,000 annual visits across 24 communities.

The milestone comes at a critical time for reproductive health care in the United States, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“We’re living in a post-Roe v. Wade world, so here without federal protection for abortion services,” Bonner said in a recent interview. “It depends on the state and the state’s legislature to determine what kind of access people have to abortion.”

Under Bonner’s tenure, PPPSGV has broadened its range of services to include not only reproductive health care but also cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and gender-affirming hormone therapy. The organization also offers birth control, HIV prevention medications, and services for male patients.

“I strongly believe that reproductive healthcare and, importantly, access to safe and legal abortion – those are just essential to our healthcare system,” Bonner said.

This belief has driven her career of over 25 years with Planned Parenthood, including her two decades leading PPPSGV.

Looking to the future, Bonner revealed plans for a new state-of-the-art health center at 630 N. Lake Ave. in Pasadena. The facility will improve accessibility due to its proximity to public transportation and will also house the organization’s administrative offices.

In addition to health care services, PPPSGV is exploring a potential partnership with the City of Pasadena to develop affordable housing on their current properties. This initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing broader community needs beyond traditional health care services.

Bonner’s leadership extends beyond her role at PPPSGV. She has served on national boards, including the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and currently serves on the Board of the Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. She also serves as a Human Services Commissioner for Pasadena. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the National Planned Parenthood Ruth Green Award.

Bonner’s leadership at PPPSGV remains pivotal since California continues maintains strong legal protections for abortion.

The organization’s growth under her guidance has influenced health care access in the region, particularly in the current legal environment where state protections have become increasingly meaningful.

PPPSGV places a strong emphasis on education, providing medically accurate and gender-inclusive sex education in classrooms and communities. The organization has a particular focus on serving youth in foster care, who often lack access to comprehensive sex education.
