After 6 years at their current temporary headquarters, Side Street Projects is pleased to announce that they are moving their mobile Headquarters to the back of John Muir High School off of Canada Ave. at Casitas Ave. right next door to Muir Ranch!
About Side Street Projects
Founded in 1992, Side Street Projects is an entirely mobile artist-run organization that teaches artists how to roll up their sleeves and do things themselves with education programs that encourage self-reliance and creative problem solving within a contemporary art context. They serve artists with extremely pragmatic support services, from children learning how to design and fabricate using tools,
to adults learning how to fund, manage, and execute artist projects.
Mobility
Side Street Projects’ offices are vintage travel trailers running off a mobile solar power generator. Their youth education program is housed in buses and trailers. Their mobility allows them to bring the organization directly to the communiy. As an entirely artist run organization, their organizational model has been nationally recognized with “The Innovative Space Award†through L.I.N.C., a 10-year
initiative spearheaded by large foundations and researchers, including Ford, Met Life, NEA, and MIT. Since then they have been studied and written about by the Urban Institute and MIT’s Urban Planning scholars.
Side Street Projects on Fair Oaks
The organization is extremely grateful to be able to stay in the NW Pasadena neighborhood through the support from the City of Pasadena and the Pasadena Unified School District. Side Street Projects has been at their current temporary location for 6 years. During that time they participated in 10 ArtNight Pasadena events, hosted over 300 community workshops, and served over 12,000 students with their mobile woodworking program half of whom were PUSD students who received the program free of cost. They also hosted 18 artist projects with over 10,000 visitors, and directly served over 1,200 artists through their artist professional support services.
Side Street Projects at Muir
The artists at Side Street Projects are inspired by their upcoming residency at John Muir High School, home to the Arts Entertainment and Media Academy, where Side Street Projects’ Executive Director, Emily Hopkins serves as an advisory board member. The first on-site artist project will be Craftopia presented by Yarn Bombing Los Angeles that will open on ArtNight Pasadena on March 13, 2015. Free Saturday community programming will remain on Fair Oaks across the Street from the old lot at 747 N Fair Oaks for the rest of January before moving to the new location in February.
