South Lake Parking Rate Increases Proposed, Pending City Council Approval

Commission recommends higher fees and extended hours for on-street meters and city lots

The South Lake Parking Place Commission (SLPPC) has voted to recommend parking rate increases for both on-street meters and city-controlled Shopper’s Lane parking lots in Pasadena’s South Lake Parking District. If approved by the City Council, the proposed changes would eliminate the current 90-minute free period in Shopper’s Lane lots, instead charging $2 per hour with a one-hour minimum and a $12 daily maximum.

Paid parking would also be extended to 24 hours a day in these lots. For South Lake parking meters, rates would increase from $1 to $3 per hour, with a two-hour maximum and extended operating hours from 9:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

The additional revenue generated from these rate hikes would cover increasing operating costs and fund continued improvements and beautification in the South Lake area. The SLPPC’s recommendations will be presented to the City Council for approval, likely during the summer, though a specific date has not been set.

“We would have to take it to Council,” Parking Manager Jon Hamblen told Pasadena Now. “We estimate taking it to council in the summer. We don’t have a specific date yet.”

The current rates for Shopper’s Lane lots include 90 minutes of free parking, followed by a $2 per hour charge thereafter, with a $6 daily maximum from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. On-street parking meters in the District presently cost $1 per hour, with a one-hour maximum, and operate Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hamblen emphasized that the implementation of the new rates, if approved, is not imminent, as an education period would be necessary before the changes take effect.

Feedback and questions regarding the proposed parking rate changes can be directed to Hamblen, who can be reached at jhamblen@cityofpasadena.net or by calling (626) 744-7463.
