The Pasadena Suzuki Music Program has postponed its spring semester start date by one week, from January 27 to February 3, following the Eaton Canyon Fire that began January 7. The schedule adjustment allows time for community recovery and air quality improvement before resuming music instruction at the well-established education program.

The Program offers violin instruction following the Suzuki method, which emphasizes learning music by ear before reading musical notation. It includes weekly individual lessons ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, group classes, and a curriculum that follows the standard Suzuki repertoire.

The Eaton Canyon Fire has significantly affected Pasadena’s music education community. The Pasadena Conservatory of Music temporarily closed its campus until January 13 while several Pasadena Unified School District facilities sustained damage, including Eliot Arts Magnet Middle School, which was destroyed.

Many musicians and industry professionals in the Altadena area have lost their homes and equipment, and the Eaton Canyon Nature Area, which hosted field trips for local music programs, has been heavily damaged.

The Program’s delayed start has led to indoor music lessons, providing a safe activity option given current air quality concerns.

The flexible scheduling allows families more time to prepare while dealing with fire-related issues.
