A Pasadena police officer was shot and wounded and a suspected gunman was killed Monday evening after a foot pursuit and exchange of gunfire near the Sierra Madre Villa Metro station in East Pasadena, Police Chief Gene Harris said.

Officer is out of the critical surgery and stable at this point, city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said early Tuesday

The confrontation began around 7:30 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a man shot in the shoulder at the A Line station near Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Electronic Drive, according to City spokesperson Lisa Derderian.

A second group of officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description nearby, Harris told FOX 11. The suspect ran, Harris said, and during the pursuit officers and the man exchanged gunfire.

The suspect was killed at the scene, Harris said.

The injured officer was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he underwent surgery Monday night, Derderian told CBS Los Angeles. Harris said the officer was conscious and talking as he was taken into the operating room.

The initial shooting victim — the man found with the shoulder wound at the station — was also hospitalized, according to Harris. Derderian told the Los Angeles Times his condition was stable.

Authorities have not identified the suspect, the wounded officer, or the initial victim.

ABC7 reported the officer is a senior member of the department.

Police have not disclosed what led to the original shooting at the station, and have not said whether the suspect and the initial victim knew each other.

CBS Los Angeles reported that officers found the suspect near the intersection of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Del Vina Street. The shootout occurred near North Halstead Street and Electronic Drive.

The Los Angeles Times, citing Derderian, reported the foot pursuit covered about three blocks. The locations are adjacent streets surrounding the station’s parking structure and bus plaza.

Police were not searching for additional suspects, Harris told the Pasadena Star-News. He said the area around Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Electronic Drive was expected to remain closed for an extended period as investigators processed the scene.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the police use of deadly force, Derderian said.
