On Saturday, December 6, at Brookside Golf Club, more than 40 members of the Wounded Warrior Project gathered for a morning of golf instruction, giveaways, and family activities hosted by First Tee Pasadena. The event reinforced what has developed into a staple community partnership between the organizations while promoting golf as an accessible sport for veterans and their families.
With more family members than ever accompanying the Warriors, word is most certainly getting out among veterans that golf is for all walks of life, all ages, and abilities.
“It’s always special. I know how much it means to them…I know how hard it is to come back and feel out of place,” said Coach Rafa Gomez, who introduced participants to an unconventional putting exercise dubbed “Zombie Putting.”
“I didn’t know what to expect teaching Zombie Putting to the Warriors, but I was pleasantly surprised how well they received it,” Gomez said.
The weekend gathering provided complimentary equipment — including clubs, bags, and balls — to military veterans. First Tee golf coaches led sessions covering full-swing techniques, chipping, and putting.
The initiative reflects First Tee Pasadena’s broader mission. Throughout the year, coaches design youth activities that incorporate core values: respect, courtesy, sportsmanship, and honesty. First Tee – Greater Pasadena works tirelessly to create an inclusive environment for both youth and veterans.
Brookside Golf Club, featuring 36 holes of championship golf, serves as the partnership’s home base. First Tee – Greater Pasadena staff, coaches, and volunteers have time and time again shared how honored they are to serve military veterans. The organization expressed gratitude to the Wounded Warrior Project’s dedication of resources to advance these opportunities for First Tee – Greater Pasadena’s staff, coaches, and volunteers to share and expand golf’s reach.
