
“Jurassic World Rebirth” is proving that the dinosaur film franchise is far from extinct, opening with $147.3 million over the extended five-day holiday weekend to easily lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The latest installment of the series, which began with director Steven Spielberg’s 1993 “Jurassic Park,” stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, and was directed by Gareth Edwards, who also helmed 2014’s “Godzilla” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
It grossed $91.5 million Friday through Sunday, but actually opened Wednesday to maximize the long July 4 weekend, and made $147.3 million over those five days, Comscore reported.
“F1 The Movie” was second with $26 million Friday through Sunday, one week after opening in first place.
“How to Train Your Dragon” grossed $11 million in its fourth week.
The animated adventure “Elio” claimed fourth place with $5.7 million in its third weekend, followed by “28 Years Later,” which took in $4.6 million in its third weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Lilo & Stitch” ($3.8 million), “M3GAN 2.0” ($3.8 million), “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” ($2.7 million), “Materialists” ($1.3 million) and “This Is Spinal Tap 41st Anniversary” ($931,737).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $156 million. The year-to-date total is $4.432 billion — up 14.6% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
