False Positive

Dear Editor,

As I read more personal experiences of those who have contracted COVID-19, I think we all should be reminded just how careful we should be once businesses begin to open up. The fact that as much as 40% of people tested for COVID-19 can get back a false negative is something we should be more aware of. Countries like South Korea have been commended for minimizing the spread of coronavirus fairly quickly due to their quick distribution of tests. However, given that so many of these tests can return a false positive, we must then also take into account the factors of social distancing, washing our hands, and wearing masks can make a huge difference even for a country as densely populated as South Korea. As California goes into phase 2 of reopening our businesses, we must remember that even small, preventative actions can make the biggest difference for our health.
