Weekend Storm to Bring Rain, Possible Thunderstorms

The second of two storm systems will move into Southern California late Saturday evening into Sunday, bringing heavier rain, possible thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

The first system, late Friday into Saturday, had minimal impact as it remained centered over Northern California, the National Weather Service reported.

The second system, expected late Saturday into Sunday, will be stronger and could bring heavy showers and possible severe storms, according to the NWS.

Forecasters said the storm will bring a 3- to 5-hour period of steady rain overnight into Sunday morning, along with increasing instability that could produce brief heavy downpours, gusty winds, lightning and a slight chance of a small tornado or waterspout.

Rainfall totals are forecast to range from about one-half inch to 1 inch, and rainfall rates could reach about a quarter- to half-inch per hour, with brief, isolated bursts up to three-quarters of an inch per hour in the strongest cells, forecasters said.

The main front is expected to move through Los Angeles County between early morning and mid-morning Sunday, with lingering showers possible into Sunday night and early Monday before drier conditions return, weather agency forecasters said.

Snow levels are expected to hover around 7,000 feet through Sunday morning before dropping to near 5,000 feet Sunday afternoon into early Monday.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for mountain areas above 5,000 feet, where up to 6 inches of snow could fall at higher elevations, with lighter accumulations possible at lower elevations.

Temperatures will remain below normal through early next week before a warming trend begins by midweek, forecasters said.
