When Flames Meet Faith: New Horizon School Becomes Sanctuary for Fire-Displaced Muslim Community

New Horizon School Pasadena (NHSP) has transformed from an educational institution into a vital community sanctuary during the holy month of Ramadan, offering displaced Muslims space for daily prayers, community meals, and support services after devastating fires affected Masjid Al-Taqwa in Altadena.

The pre-K-8 school has opened its Cypress Avenue campus facilities to serve as a community hub for Muslims displaced by the recent fires, providing essential religious and community spaces during a critical time for gathering in Islam.

“In the spirit of Ramadan, and in following the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, supporting our neighbors is deeply emphasized in Islam and is considered an important part of our faith,” New Horizon School said in a message on its website.

The timing adds spiritual significance to the school’s response, as the Muslim holy month traditionally emphasizes charity and community support through practices like daily prayers and iftar meals breaking the daily fast.

School officials have established a formal partnership with Masjid Al-Taqwa (a mosque in Altadena) to ensure effective distribution of aid to those most affected by the fires.

“In response to the devastating fires that have impacted countless families in Altadena, we are partnering with Masjid Al-Taqwa to provide direct and immediate support to those in urgent need,” the school’s message said.

The fires coincided with NHSP’s annual Ramadan Appeal fundraising campaign, prompting school leaders to redirect these efforts from educational programs toward emergency relief for their neighbors in need.

“A portion of the funds raised through our Ramadan campaign will be donated directly to the Masjid’s Zakat Fund, ensuring that every contribution goes towards covering essential costs for fire victims,” according to NHSP.

Founded in 1984, NHSP has established itself as a cornerstone of private education in Pasadena, serving approximately 201 students with an educational philosophy built on four pillars: Nurture, Engage, Inspire, and Lead.

The school has received national recognition, including the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon School award, and maintains accreditation from the California Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

This emergency response aligns with the school’s educational approach of integrating California Common Core Standards with Islamic studies while teaching students about community responsibility through direct example during this crisis.

Last year, NHSP raised over $6,800 for KinderUSA to provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians during its Ramadan campaign. Donations to the redirected campaign qualify as Zakat, which refers to a form of obligatory charitable giving in Islam.

“Together, we can help those affected by the fire recover and heal. Your generosity can bring hope during this difficult time,” NHSP said in their appeal for community support.
