The ArtCenter College of Design will host renowned artist Matthew Barney for its Spring 2025 Graduate Art guest lecture series on Tuesday, February 25. The free public seminar, organized by Jack Bankowsky, will take place at 7:15 p.m. in the Los Angeles Times Media Center at the Hillside Campus, located at 1700 Lida St, Pasadena, CA 91103. No RSVPs are required for this event.

Barney, a member of the Academy of Arts and Letters since 2024, is celebrated for his diverse artistic practice spanning film, performance, sculpture, photography, and drawing. His work notably includes landmark productions like “The Cremaster Cycle” (1994-2002), “River of Fundament” (2014), and “Redoubt” (2019).

The artist has launched his latest video installation, “SECONDARY,” through a series of exhibitions featuring related sculpture works and drawings. His distinctive approach incorporates unconventional materials, from petroleum jelly to ceramic, creating objects and installations that are intrinsically linked to his cinematic world.

Barney’s career includes prestigious solo exhibitions at leading institutions worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Schaulager in Basel (2010 and 2021), the Morgan Library and Museum in New York (2013), Haus der Kunst in Munich (2014), and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris (2024). His accolades include the Aperto Prize at the Venice Biennale (1993), the Hugo Boss Prize (1996), the Kaiser Ring Award (2007), and the Golden Gate Persistence of Vision Award (2011).

The lecture series receives support from Jack Shear, Brenda R. Potter, Brendan Dugan, Lisson Gallery, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Sprüth Magers, BLUM, Hannah Hoffman, Alan Hergott, and David Kordansky. ArtCenter’s Graduate Art program emphasizes intensive studio practice and rigorous academic coursework, distinguished by its low faculty-to-student ratio. Faculty and students work across all genres — film, video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance and installation. Many program alumni have achieved national and international acclaim, frequently returning as visiting faculty and guest lecturers.
