The Salastina Music Society, which in normal times considers Barrett Hall at the Pasadena Conservatory its eastside LA home, will be hosting composer and songwriter Alan Menken on its virtual “Happy Hour No. 48,” Tuesday, March 16, at 6 to 7 p.m.
“Happy Hour” has been online every Tuesday since April 7, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Salastina has produced these free weekly events on Zoom, featuring musical performances, a peek behind the creative curtain, and personal interaction with musicians and fellow music lovers.
Delighted by the community built by these events, Salastina has committed to holding “Happy Hour” indefinitely.
Alan Menken is best known for his scores and songs for films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, such as “The Little Mermaid (1989),” “Beauty and the Beast (1991),” “Aladdin (1992),” and “Pocahontas (1995).” Each of these films have won him two Academy Awards.
He also composed the scores and songs for “Little Shop of Horrors (1986),” “Newsies (1992),” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996),” “Hercules (1997),” “Home on the Range (2004),” “Enchanted (2007),” and “Tangled (2010),” among others.
His accolades include the eight Academy Awards, a Tony Award, eleven Grammy Awards, and seven Golden Globe Awards.
The eight Oscars make Menken the second most prolific Academy Awards winner in the music categories after Alfred Newman, who has nine.
Menken is one of only 16 people to have won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony.
