The Amapola Players will present two culturally significant theatrical works that explore immigrant experiences and family relationships during their second season at Parson’s Nose Theater.
The performances showcase stories reflecting the cultural heritage and history of the Southwest, particularly focusing on communities with roots in the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Philippines.
The double bill will be performed Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 with curtain at 7 p.m. at Parson’s Nose Theater, located at 95 North Marengo Avenue, Suite 110, in downtown Pasadena.
The evening will begin with “Mami and Me,” written by Peruvian immigrant and storyteller Rosa Navarrete, followed by “The Texas Ocean” by Josephine Nericcio.
“Mami and Me” explores intergenerational connections across cultural boundaries. The play “tells the story of a grandmother’s love that crosses borders, language, and timelines to help liberate her curious granddaughter from a history of silence.”
“The Texas Ocean” will have its Southern California premiere as a staged reading by The Amapola Players. The work, which was selected as an American Blue Ink finalist and chosen for Houston Texas’ Sin Muros Festival, centers on family caregiving challenges. The story follows “Alma Canales returns home to see her father, who has Alzheimer’s, and learns that her mother has fired the home aide helping care for him and is refusing to hire anyone else.”
Roberta H. Martínez will direct both productions. The cast includes Oscar T. Basulto, Stephanie Hoston, Roberta H. Martínez, Tony Sancho, Liane Schirmer, Emma Valdez, and Carla Valentine.
Tickets cost $15.00. For more information, audiences can visit www.parsonsnose.org or call (626) 345-5116.
