Kate Mosher Hall, a Los Angeles-based artist celebrated for her enigmatic paintings, will deliver a lecture at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena on Oct. 1. The event is part of the Fall 2024 Graduate Art guest lecture series organized by Kelly Akashi.

Hall’s work aims to create space and cultivate a special kind of openendedness. Her paintings combine figurative and obfuscated elements, hinting at narrative structures while resisting straightforward interpretation. Hall’s works oscillate between acknowledging their materials and creating seductive illusions drawn from illustration and found images.

Hall’s artistic approach emphasizes indeterminacy and enigma, allowing for visual complexities that she sees as allegories to life experiences and broken conditions that she ultimately celebrates. Her paintings often explore duality, fragmentation, and the merger of forms.

The artist’s recent exhibitions include “Never Odd or Even” at Hannah Hoffman, Los Angeles (2024), “Big View” at Miguel Abreu, New York (2023), “The Reminder” at Audain Gallery, Vancouver BC (2023), “Offset” at Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2021), and “Without a body, without Bill” at Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles (2021). Hall received her Master of Fine Arts from University of California, Los Angeles.

The event, free and open to the public with no RSVP required, will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Los Angeles Times Media Center, ArtCenter College of Design, Hillside Campus, 1700 Lida Street.

ArtCenter’s Graduate Seminar lecture series provides a forum for students and the public to engage with internationally recognized artists. The series is supported by various donors, including Jack Shear, Brenda R. Potter, Brendan Dugan, Lisson Gallery, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Sprüth Magers, BLUM, Alan Hergott, and David Kordansky.

ArtCenter’s Graduate Art program is known for its intensive studio practice and rigorous academic coursework. It encompasses various disciplines including film, video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance, and installation. The program boasts a low faculty-to-student ratio, offering students the attention needed to refine their artistic goals.

The school’s alumni have achieved national and international acclaim, with many returning as visiting faculty and guest lecturers.
