Beat the Late Summer Heat: Essential Car Checks

Published on Aug 26, 2024

As the school year begins and the summer heatwave continues, it’s more important than ever to ensure your car is road-ready. With temperatures still soaring, local automotive expert Mike Kefalas from JK Volvo in Pasadena offers these essential summer car checks:

  1. Tire Pressure Monitoring

According to Kefalas, who has headed his family’s automotive repair business since 1997, tire pressure is a critical factor in ensuring optimal vehicle performance and safety, especially during hot weather.

“Tires are the only point of contact between your car and the road,” he explains. “Overinflated tires can lead to reduced traction and uneven wear, while underinflated tires increase the risk of blowouts and can even affect fuel efficiency.”

“Regularly checking your tire pressure is essential. Use a reliable gauge and adjust as needed. Remember, tires should be checked when cold, ideally in the morning.”

  1. Battery Health Check

High temperatures can accelerate battery degradation, especially in older models.

“A car’s battery is like its heart,” he explains. “It’s essential for starting the engine and powering various electrical components. A well-maintained battery is crucial for reliable vehicle performance.”

Kefalas recommends inspecting your battery for signs of corrosion and having it tested regularly.

“If you notice any issues, don’t hesitate to have your battery replaced,” he says. It’s worth the effort.

  1. Air Conditioning Maintenance

A well-functioning AC system is essential for comfort and safety, especially during the late summer heat. Mike Kefalas emphasizes the importance of regular AC maintenance.

“An efficient AC system can help prevent heat-related illnesses, especially for families with children,” he points out. “It can also improve fuel economy by reducing the engine’s workload.”

Kefalas recommends having your AC system inspected and serviced at least once annually.

“This includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting the compressor, and ensuring the condenser is clean and free of obstructions,” he advises.

By prioritizing these essential checks, you can help ensure a safe and comfortable ride throughout the rest of the summer.

Remember, Kefalas said., a little preventive maintenance can go a long way in keeping your vehicle running smoothly in the heat.

It is really straightforward, he  says: “Investing time and effort into car maintenance now can save you headaches and money down the road.”
