Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake is one of Southern California’s most popular year-round destinations, though winter brings an especially magical charm. From the crisp mountain air to a host of activities, a December visit to this alpine retreat proved to be a welcome escape.
Though the last 30 or so miles up Highway 30 out of San Bernardino might be a somewhat daunting drive, there’s a reason why the resort area is so popular.
Ironically, there was no snow involved with this particular winter getaway, though it was only days before Christmas. Perhaps for the best, as there was no skiing on our agenda, though the snow machines were working overtime at the local ski lifts, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit.
A thoughtfully curated itinerary and a generous gift packet provided by visitbigbear.com help set the stage for our much-needed cozy experience.
Accommodations at The Chateau in Big Bear, a Best Western property and perhaps the largest in town, were cozy and warm and mountain luxurious. Set just off Big Bear Boulevard, this recently renovated charming lodge easily blended rustic mountain aesthetics with modern comforts. The spacious king-bed suite was warmly decorated, featuring a fireplace for that perfect winter vibe, as we slept like convicts.
A hearty breakfast each day set the mood for each adventure before we headed out to explore. The Chateau’s daily breakfast is a wide choice of offerings from bacon to pancakes, as well as eggs of every kind. (None for me, thanks.) The friendly staff ensured every detail was attended to, whether relaxing in the outdoor hot tub under a starlit sky, or enjoying the cozy lobby’s inviting atmosphere, The Chateau in Big Bear offered a peaceful and comfortable retreat after busy days.
The first evening’s itinerary kicked off with an adrenaline-pumping axe-throwing session at Yosemite Axe Throwing. This was actually much more fun than we anticipated. Owned by STIHL Timbersports World Champion Nate Hodges, our expert and patient instructor showed me the fine and deadly art of flinging an axe at a target.
It’s not in the wrist, and it’s not like throwing a baseball. Eventually I was able to string together at least one bullseye in a row. (See video). I can’t even begin to imagine what it would have been like using these in battle. But let’s move on, shall we? Suffice to say that the fun, exuberant atmosphere made Yosemite Axe Throwing an excellent way to ease into the mountain vibe.
After working up an appetite, a visit to Barrel 33, an upscale winery, offered a refined contrast. We were actually more hungry than eager to drink, but we had our fill with flat bread pizzas and grilled sandwiches.
The intimate wine bar served a selection of local and international wines, which we indulged in sparingly, paired with the yummy bites. We’re due back for a visit soon.
The next morning began with a Big Bear Hiking Adventures tour. Led by an expert guide, the mile-up-and-mile back trek showcased breathtaking views of the snow-covered landscape and offered insight into the region’s rich ecology. The crisp mountain air and serene surroundings made this a highlight of the trip.
After Chinese food and an afternoon at leisure, the evening took a playful turn with Glow Bowling at Bowling Barn. This is a loud, fun big city bowling alley, neon-lit lanes, lively music, and fun atmosphere. And once again, I managed to bowl a strike while the video was rolling. It’s the little things, peeps.
Dinner at Hacienda Grill was serious, fun Mexican food. Offering authentic Mexican flavors, the meal featured generous portions and vibrant dishes, complemented by handcrafted margaritas. We dined on Chile Colorado and enchiladas with fresh hot flour tortillas. You’re hungry already, Hombre.
Before departing, a visit to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo provided a calming conclusion to the trip. Home to rescued and rehabilitated wildlife, the zoo offers an up-close look at native species, from black bears to majestic eagles. The knowledgeable staff and well-maintained exhibits made for an educational and inspiring visit.
Big Bear Lake delivers the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you’re hoofing it on scenic trails, scarfing gourmet meals, or embracing new experiences, this mountain town offers something for everyone, as the saying goes. Thoughtfully arranged and generously hosted, this trip highlighted the very best of Big Bear.
Snow just might be overrated, though it is admittedly romantic.
And, speaking of which, we just got a little nudge about a pretty spectacular Big Bear Valentine’s Day getaway. It’s a helicopter ride and a posh lakefront home.
Here are the details: A 45-minute adventure begins via Orbic Air; with a flight to the luxe Loro’s Lookout, a plush lakefront A frame set in modernist Scandinavian design with an ensuite fireplace, private hot tub and boat dock (at $1025 per night) or a package called “Luxury on the Lake,” where guests can pre-order sommelier selected wines and tuck away in a grand lakeview home with views to Japan ($1285+nt.).
We don’t usually talk prices here, but just so you know, this one is gonna be Air, two-night stay, and a mixologist. $4500. Just saying.
For anyone seeking a winter escape filled with charm, adventure, and hospitality, Big Bear is a destination that truly shines.
