In a nostalgic nod to cinema and science, the California Institute of Technology will present an outdoor screening of “Back to the Future” on August 1. The event, scheduled from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., will take place at the Sherman Fairchild Amphitheater on the Caltech campus.

This screening marks the finale of the institution’s annual summer outdoor movie nights, offering students and community members a chance to enjoy a beloved film al fresco. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and jackets for comfort during the evening showing, with the movie set to start promptly at 8:00 p.m.

“Back to the Future” follows the adventures of “A teenager [who] is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence,” according to the event description.

The Caltech Library, in partnership with the Center for Inclusion & Diversity’s First-Year Success Research Institute (FSRI), is organizing the event. Free popcorn and light movie snacks will be provided to enhance the cinematic experience for attendees.

Paula Gaetos, the contact person for the event, can be reached at pgaetos@library.caltech.edu for additional information. Those interested can also visit https://libcal.caltech.edu/event/12483898 for more details and to add the event to their calendar.

This screening not only serves as entertainment but also as a community-building opportunity, bringing together students, faculty, and local residents. It reflects Caltech’s commitment to fostering a vibrant campus life that extends beyond academic pursuits.

The choice of “Back to the Future” aligns with Caltech’s scientific focus, presenting a fictional yet engaging take on time travel and physics. This selection may spark discussions on the intersection of science and popular culture among attendees.

As summer draws to a close, this event offers a final chance for outdoor relaxation before the fall semester begins. The Sherman Fairchild Amphitheater provides an ideal setting for an open-air cinema experience on a warm August evening.
