Caltech Vocal Octet to Release Holiday Album at Candlelit Concert

Amateur scientists turned chamber musicians will perform sacred works and contemporary arrangements
Published on Dec 15, 2024

A group of eight Caltech scientists who moonlight as classical vocalists will present their new holiday album, Stellata, at a candlelit concert this Sunday in Pasadena.

The ensemble, known as OcTech, will perform selections from their latest recording featuring complex and stunning choral music at the Kerckhoff Morgan Library’s second floor, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

With soaring melodies and lush harmonies, the program includes Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” and Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” alongside contemporary interpretations like Miles Ramway’s “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.”

Founded in 2021, OcTech has established itself in Southern California’s classical music scene through performances at venues including Pasadena’s Parson’s Nose Theater and benefit concerts that have raised thousands for charitable causes.

The Dec. 15 concert, representing a rich tapestry of sound, history, and connection, marks a milestone for the ensemble, which specializes in technically demanding eight-part choral arrangements.

Stellata marks the group’s second album release, following their previous recording titled Consona.

Entrance to the Kerckhoff Morgan Library is on Wilson Avenue and parking is available at 1248 E. California Blvd. Street parking is also available on Wilson Ave. and California Blvd.
