Descanso Gardens has opened its annual ‘Carved’ event, welcoming visitors again to an enchanting walk through a garden transformed by hundreds of carved jack-o’-lanterns and fascinating sculptures.
Throughout the 150-acre site, there are lights and sounds everywhere you look, combining to create worlds of fantasy, surprises and just a little spookiness.
This year’s event also includes the model trains of the Descanso Railroad, decked out with an array of lights.
There are also the Wood Spirits—five characters hand-carved from massive logs by Chainsaw Jenna—that will bring a touch of whimsy to the trail, along with the intricately detailed jack-o’-lanterns everywhere you look, from petite to giant-size.
The “Rhizome” installation by artists Tom and Lien Dekyvere, another return from previous years, is a fascinating web of lights and sounds amongst the Descanso Garden trees, creating a dramatic and all-enveloping atmosphere.
“This is our second trip,” said Jackie Contreras of East Pasadena, who brought her two sons and a family friend to the event. “This is better than last year’s, but last year’s was fun, too.”
“Carved has always been one of our most exciting events, and this year, we’ve added even more for visitors to enjoy,” said Juliann Rooke, CEO of Descanso Gardens. “It’s not just a Halloween celebration—it’s a celebration of artistry, community, and the joy of being outdoors.”
