Susan Michals, president and creator of CatCon, says the event was born from a desire to build a community for cat enthusiasts.
“I created CatCon as a way to build a community for cat lovers – there is no IRL equivalent of a dog park for cat people,” Michals explained.
The event has grown significantly since its inception nine years ago, attracting attendees from all 50 states and 24 countries. Last year’s show sold out, highlighting the increasing popularity of cat-related events and communities.
CatCon 2024 will feature over 150 exhibitors showcasing cat-related products and services. The event’s centerpiece is the adoption village, sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and facilitated by Pasadena Humane, where 200 kittens will be available for potential adoption.
Visitors can look forward to photo opportunities, including the Mad Catter’s Tea Room inspired by “Alice in Wonderland” and a related pop-up exhibition called “Whiskered Wonderland.” The event will also host appearances by popular cat celebrities and influencers, including BriAnne Willis, Anka Lavriv, and Cat Named Calvin.
“I’m excited for our ‘CAT-oure, Cosplay and Furrocious Fashion’ panel, and comedian Shiadanni’s conversation with the heroes of the Australian Firefighters Calendar is going to be a riot,” Michals said.
Educational workshops on cat health and culture will be led by experts in the field. Dr. Evan Antin will conduct a panel on feline health, while EveryCat Health Foundation will discuss extending cats’ lifespans.
Highlights of the event include Bob Baker’s Meow-ionettes and numerous giveaways, offering attendees a full day of feline-focused entertainment and education.
The event aims to challenge stereotypes associated with cat ownership.
“Our goal has always been to debunk the cat lady myth,” Michals stated, emphasizing the event’s role in promoting a modern image of cat enthusiasts.
Since 2014, CatCon’s parent company, Ticket Out, Inc., has donated over $375,000 to charity, underlining the event’s commitment to supporting animal welfare causes. Michals credits the success of the large-scale event to her dedicated team, describing CatCon as “truly a team effort.”
Tickets for CatCon 2024 start at $11.42 for children (under 5 free) and $53.14 for adults. Click here.
For safety reasons, attendees are required to leave their cats at home, and any adopted cats will be held until the end of the event to ensure their safety and proper transition to their new homes.
“Next year is our tenth anniversary, so you can expect an epic celebration, with lots of surprises!” Michals said.
