Celebrities to Grace Red Carpet Opening Night of “Sunday in the Park with George” at the Playhouse Today

Published on Feb 19, 2023

The Pasadena Playhouse will be the scene of the opening night red carpet debut of “Sunday in the Park with George” tonight as part of the Playhouse’s Sondheim celebration. Confirmed celebrities on the guest list include Rosie O’Donnell, Wayne Brady, Wendie Malick, Alfred Molina, Teri Hatcher, Anna Camp, Larry Owens and many more.

The opening is just one part of an ambitious months-long Playhouse tribute to influential composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim that features a variety of activities, including a theatrical exhibition and performance series, a workshop series, a film series,

The performance series will include musicals, songs, and scenes from Sondheim’s musicals.

Now onstage through March 14 comes Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George,” recipient of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Described as “a jewel in its own right, radiant with talent, and shimmering with color and light” by the New York Theatre Guide the work brings theatergoers to a Sunday afternoon on thÎle de la Grande Jatte, an island in the river Seine in Paris, where French artist George Seurat is hoping to find the inspiration to create a masterpiece.

As the piece comes together, the people come alive; his mother, his friends, his critics, the woman he loves. Stroke by stroke, dot by dot, will George create something lasting, something new? (He does, of course, creating his best-known work — itself a sparkling example of pointillism and a founding work of the neo-impressionist movement.)

The entire celebration is expected to last through August. It will include a wide range of Sondheim’s works, from his early musicals to his later works.

A related exhibition, which will be held in the Playhouse’s lobby, will feature costumes and sets from Sondheim’s musicals, along with photographs and other memorabilia. The workshop series will include classes and workshops on musical theater, including acting, singing, and dancing. The film series will feature films related to Sondheim’s works, as well as documentaries about his life and career. The celebration will also include special events, such as panels and lectures, and a book club focusing on Sondheim’s works. No Sondheim fan should miss these events.
