Prepare to be immersed in the wonders and challenges of our oceanic world as Movies That Matter brings the award-winning documentary “Chasing Coral” to the big screen. This thought-provoking film will be showcased on Tuesday, July 25, at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in Beckman Auditorium, followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director.
“Chasing Coral” offers a gripping look into the severe oceanic bleaching event, considered the most significant in recorded history. Between 2014 and 2017, 75% of coral reefs suffered or perished due to heat stress caused by climate change. Experts predict that without significant action, bleaching events will occur annually by 2034, leading to a potential loss of 90% of coral reefs by 2050.
The documentary follows a dedicated team of divers, photographers, and scientists who embark on a mission to capture the elusive process of coral bleaching. The film’s three-year production involved meticulous curation from over 500 hours of underwater footage and submissions from more than 30 countries, presenting a global perspective on the issue.
Admission to the event is free; however, due to the limited capacity of Beckman Auditorium, interested attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Secure your spot now by visiting the registration page at https://caltechlive.wufoo.com/forms/m1i6xb7n174c7sc/.
