“Let’s go for a walk in the cemetery! Join us at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena for an evening wildlife walk. We’ll observe the many wild animals that call the cemetery home (including birds, squirrels and coyotes), identify flowers and plants, and learn more about some of the locally famous gravestones around us,” reads the event invitation from Pasadena Humane.
On Friday, July 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., the organization hosts its Cemetery Wildlife Walk, a guided evening tour through Mountain View Cemetery.
Tickets are $7.18 per person, according to Eventbrite.
Attendees will meet at the cemetery’s main gate and office at 2400 North Fair Oaks Avenue in Altadena.
Founded in 1882 by Levi W. Giddings, the cemetery spans 55 to 60 acres and holds more than 142,000 interments.
Still operated by Giddings’ descendants, it has become not only a site of remembrance but also an important refuge for wildlife.
According to Pasadena Humane, the cemetery is home to birds, squirrels, coyotes and a variety of plants.
Pasadena Humane was established in 1903 as “The Pasadena Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Dumb Animals.”
Now led by Interim President and CEO Chris Ramon, the nonprofit continues to advance its mission “to lead the way toward a compassionate and caring community for all animals.”
Participants are asked to leave pets at home.
As organizers note: “We love your pets, but please leave them at home so we don’t scare away any wildlife.”
