Don’t Miss Pasadena’s Grand Design Finale This Sunday

Published on May 16, 2025

As the clock winds down on the 60th Pasadena Showcase House of Design, residents and visitors alike have just days—through Sunday, May 18—to tour one of the most ambitious presentations in the event’s history. Set against the storied backdrop of the Bauer Estate & Gardens, this year’s Showcase House offers a rare convergence of architectural splendor, garden artistry and community resilience.

A Living Monument to Southern California’s Design Legacy

Nestled on five lush acres at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, the 1928 Monterey Colonial Revival–style Bauer Estate spans more than 15,000 square feet and has welcomed only two families in its 96-year history. Architect Reginald D. Johnson’s signature arches and stucco façades set the stage for more than 30 interior and landscape designers to reimagine 18 major rooms and the historic Bashford gardens. From wallpapered ceilings to layered textiles and Mediterranean-inspired terraces, each space reflects both cutting-edge trends in maximalism and the estate’s original English influences.

A Tribute Born of Adversity

This year’s showcase carries special meaning: four participating designers are rebuilding after the Eaton Fire destroyed their homes. Their work—a testament to creativity amid loss—is woven throughout the house, and a portion of proceeds will benefit local schools and community organizations impacted by the blaze. As designer Lydia Chen notes, “The way our community has rallied around us has turned personal tragedy into collective inspiration.”

More Than a Tour: A Full-Day Experience

Visitors can explore the house Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday until 6 p.m.; and weekends until 5 p.m. Alongside self-guided tours, attendees will find boutique shopping, on-site dining and a calendar of special events that includes themed brunches, live music performances and evening dinners under the stars. Accessibility accommodations, including a narrated video tour, ensure that guests of all abilities can enjoy the estate’s grandeur.

Supporting the Arts, One Room at a Time

Since its founding in 1965, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has contributed more than $27 million to arts education and community programs throughout Southern California. Every ticket purchased fuels grants for school-based music programs, nonprofit arts organizations and emerging artists. To date, more than 1,000 grants have been awarded—an enduring legacy of cultural enrichment grounded in this annual design showcase.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Plan Ahead: Advance tickets and timed-entry passes are strongly recommended.
  • Dress for Comfort: The five-acre grounds demand sturdy, flat-soled shoes; high heels are discouraged.
  • Travel Light: Large bags and backpacks are not permitted inside the house.
  • Family Note: Children under 10 and non-service animals may not enter.

With fewer than 72 hours remaining, the Pasadena Showcase House offers more than inspiration—it provides a final opportunity to witness how a community transforms history, hardship and horticulture into a vibrant celebration of design. Don’t let the gates close without experiencing the elegance and endurance of the Bauer Estate.
