As Southern California transitions to fall with cooler temperatures and with rainy days ahead, many Pasadena families may notice their vehicles performing differently than during summer’s dry heat — a change that demands immediate attention, according to a leading local automotive specialist.
“Fall is one of the most crucial times for vehicle maintenance,” said Mike Kefalas, automotive expert at JK Volvo in Pasadena. “The changes in temperature and moisture in the air can affect several car components, and taking action now can save you a lot of hassle as winter approaches.”
The arrival of cooler temperatures creates particular challenges for car batteries, which tend to show their age during cooler weather.
“Batteries tend to show their age during cooler weather,” Kefalas notes. “Now is the perfect time to have it tested. It’s a simple check that can save you from being stranded.” He advises that if your battery is over three years old, consider replacing it to avoid inconvenient breakdowns.
Tire safety becomes especially critical as fall rains arrive, with dropping temperatures causing tire pressure to decrease naturally.
“Tire pressure plays a big role in vehicle safety, especially when roads are wet,” Kefalas said, recommending checking tire pressure at least once a month and topping off air if necessary.
Beyond pressure, he emphasizes checking tread depth: “Tires with adequate tread help prevent hydroplaning, especially in the first few rains of the season.”
For those with worn tires, fall presents the most logical time to invest in a new set.
The season’s wet conditions also place extra demands on braking systems.
“Wet conditions can amplify any existing brake issues,” Kefalas warned. He recommends drivers actively listen for squeaks or grinding sounds and feel for vibrations — signs that could indicate worn brake pads or rotor problems requiring immediate attention.
After months under the hot California sun, windshield wipers often become brittle and ineffective.
“Visibility is paramount in rainy weather, yet many drivers overlook their wipers,” Kefalas said. “If they’re leaving streaks or making noise, it’s time for a new set.”
He specifically encourages replacement as the rainy season begins to ensure wipers can handle sudden downpours.
Earlier sunsets mean more nighttime driving, making proper lighting essential. Kefalas emphasizes checking all vehicle lights, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. “Dirt, dust, and sun exposure can dull your headlights over time, and dim lights reduce visibility for you and other drivers,” he said. A quick headlight restoration or replacement can enhance road safety.
The expert stressed that preventive maintenance provides both practical and psychological benefits.
“This is the season to catch up on any maintenance you might have missed over the summer. These small steps don’t just prolong the life of your car; they also give you peace of mind,” Kefalas said.
